Self-employed in Morocco: status, steps, and limits

Definition and advantages

Self-employed status in Morocco (RNAE) is a simplified regime for individuals carrying out commercial, craft, or service activities. Registration is online on ae.gov.ma.

Advantages: flat income tax on collected revenue (1% services, 0.5% trade), little paperwork, quick market entry, generally no VAT. The most sought-after status among new Moroccan freelancers.

Limits: MAD 200,000 cap (services) or MAD 500,000 (trade), limited AMO social protection vs employee status, no professional expense deductions for flat income tax.

Taxation and obligations

Flat income tax + flat AMO contribution (decrees of 17 Nov 2021): two separate charges to budget. Our net income simulator calculates official net.

Periodic RNAE revenue filings and quarterly AMO payments are mandatory. Late filing = penalties. Minimum AMO: MAD 300/quarter.

Anticipate the cap with our calculator from 60–70% of the threshold.

Key self-employed steps

RNAE registration + ICE → CNSS affiliation → first compliant invoice → regular filings.

Each WEEPO guide covers one step: registration, declaration, CNSS, cap, deregistration, taxation.

When to leave self-employed status

Approaching the AE cap, recurring foreign clients, or needing employee social protection: umbrella is the fastest alternative without incorporating.

Durable volume, partners, or need for a legal entity: consider LLC / single-member LLC with an accountant.
